A whopping Rs. 8.5 billion is due to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) from various institutions including the Army and the Navy, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said in Parliament yesterday.

The Minister made this disclosure in response to a question by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake. Mr. Ranawaka said that Rs.989 million is due from trade debtors and Rs. 7.5 billion from street lighting debtors.

In December 2004, when a similar predicament befell the South-Eastern and the Western costal belt of our island, there was some ambiguity in the media circles over the term with which it had to be identified. According to the Mahinda Chinthana vision fulfilling the aspirations of the Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka of Providing energy to all by 2012, The grand ceremony of adding 300 MW coal power to the National grid will take place tomorrow (2011.03.22) at 05.30 Pm.

The first stage of this Coal Power station inaugurated by the President cost $ 455 Million. The Ministry of Power and energy stated that the funding for this project was provided by the Chinese Government on a long term low interest rate to the Sri Lankan Government.

The Construction work is carried out by CMEC China National Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation. As local investment the Sri Lankan Government has invested Rs. 5300 Million for the first stage.

Under the first stage of the project burning of fuel was carried out at the site on the 2010.11.17. For 80 families that lost their property during the 1st stage of construction, houses have been constructed and presented on 20 perches complete with drinking water electricity and all basic facilities, and also roads and pre schools were constructed while the Puttlam Kalpitiya main road was widened to 40 feet. Furthermore 200 acres were provided to these families for cultivation. This Coal Power plant will no doubt be an ideal solution to the country’s power issues.

The Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka together with Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekera Secretary M.M.C Fernando, The Chinese Ambassador together with several other ministers and officials of the Ministry of Power and Energy and CEB will grace this occasion.

Addressing the Media briefing announcing the CEB 2010 Financial progress yesterday, Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka stated that after 10 years the CEB has been able to show a Rs. 5 billion profit.

The government is looking into the viability of commissioning a High Capacity Power Transmission Link (HCPTL) with the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), in a joint venture with India, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said yesterday.

The country has incurred a loss of Rs.72 billion since 1990 as a result of buying electricity from the private sector to make up for the shortage from government power plants, Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka said yesterday. Speaking at a ceremony for the firing of the Norochcholai coal power plant boilers said Sri Lanka had some 20 million electricity consumers with each of them paying about Rs.3,500 to cover the loss.

“This is apart from what the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has to pay,” the Minister said and added that the Norochcholai and Upper Kothmale power plants would help minimize the financial loss incurred by buying electricity from private sector companies.  More...

Isotope techniques using atomic energy will be a solution to avoid further deterioration of dams in the country that are subjected to seepage and leakage, Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka said on Tuesday (Nov 2) addressing a seminar at the Atomic Energy Authority (AEA).

“Isotope technology is a tool to detect leakage paths of existing dams to perform cost effective repair and modifications. Today most dams are subjected to leakage and seepage, while four dams are at high risk level, 10 are at medium level and others need intensified maintenance and this is possible with isotope technology,” Minister Ranawaka said.
